Imagine living in a place where the outside temperature is 25f and inside is 63f and there is nothing you can do to improve the situation. Imagine living in a place where the government turns your heat on and turns your heat off and decides how much heat to give you. Imagine getting a letter on the 12th of the month stating you must pay for heat nearly 3 times what you usually pay each month or else your heat will be turned off on the 15th of the month. That precisely is our situation today in Kiev. Our heat cost went from $3000/month to a whopping $8750. That’s a huge increase!
Yes, there is an economic crisis in the world and certainly here in Ukraine as well! Well meaning government people signed contracts with Russia which ultimately increased the gas price. So what better way to compensate than to pass on the huge increase to the consumer. Honestly, I don’t know how the people here can afford such an increase! For us at the Ark it is absolutely overwhelming. Thankfully my faith is in God and as I see it right now only He can provide for this unexpected enormous budget increase.
The economic situation here is quickly becoming panic. Last month hard currency was totally unable to be purchased at any of the banks or exchange kiosks. Of course the government denies this fact but I can personally tell you it is true. Many Ukrainians have loans they are required to pay in dollars. Given the current exchange rate they are paying in excess of a 47% interest rate. That’s absolutely crazy! Then to make matters even worse yet again Ukraine was denied a NATO invitation. Of course Russia is delighted and even their NATO ambassador was seen snickering and saying, “NATO used her and refused her.” Doesn’t sound so bad in English but in Russian it’s a major insult and quite crude. What is it going to take for the USA, Germany and France to wake up and see that Ukraine is a strong ally and is much better in NATO than aligned with Russia? For over 2 centuries the West has placated Russia at Ukraine’s expense. Each time Russia invariably turned on the West and Ukraine suffered the most.
